January 26 Ponders Part 1There Was this Little Puppy
There was once this little puppy
of which its fur silky pure white Its space the four cornered drain Where round its mum he wander
It was a great time it had
with sibling puppies he quarrel that is his daily predicament It had more than he ever needed
One day it left the comfortness
and with rage it barked so "I want an adventure, To the outside of the drain I shall explore" Little did the poor puppy knew that
the place they call the world is not what adventurous as it seemed It somehow got fed up with the limited space and left The world gave its first greeting
A splash of mud strewn over it its coat furry pure white no more The fiery sun baked it till its dry and hard Among lazy streets strolled thousands
Thousand of his adult kind The dogs wander about doing their trade some looked scruffy some just looked well groomed

So Chinese New Year is coming and as per the title, everything just feel so normal and routine to me. That special cookies that we get to munch seemed so plain and everyday tea-like. That flashy red ang pau seemed so... maybe more inviting, consider waiting for that paycheck that will never come forever, its a blessing of some sorts. Oh, and that deafening "tong tong tong chiang" never seemed to attack my ears, however I never even give a thought about it as I stepped out of my office, which happens to be next to a music store (The walls are sound proof, thankfully). So guys if you want to know how its like repeat the following:
This translates as "congrats, golden lion comes to visit" something like that. So the song just repeats on and on until you get used to it. Sighz. Anyway tried my hands on the elusive Kuih Bangkit. Was very very Gung Ho about it until I messed up the dough and the outcome is ruined. And mind you I am not showing pics of it. Seriously, I never show things that did not turn out right, it is absolutely a disgrace for other people. However, I shall not be giving up that easily and vowed to get it right and show it and of course share it with others.
Exactly what happened? You may ask. Well... the dough that I kneaded was apparently too "wet" , until the shape of the cookies do not hold properly and expanded like pan cakes in the oven... What a "horrific" experience I had... Again, I thought that was a good experience and realized that the "bits of pancake" still tasted like kuih bangkit... tsk tsk tsk. For you guys who dont know what kuih bangkit is, its a white cookie that "melts in your mouth" and comes in all shapes and sizes. Should be familiar right now huh? Pictures? You can see mine when I get it right this weekend... The tips in belachan2 is indeed valuable and had spurred me to try again. In case you dont know, this cookie has a "high failure rate" as it is important to get the right flour/milk consistency and the right baking time and temperature. So valuable pointers are such:
Okay. I got the tips. Now Im going to try it again.. So wish me all the best ya guys. Au Revoir! November 24 Jazz, a story told but will not end Oscar Peterson - the jazz piano expert Im not sure about when I first fall in love for Jazz music, nor do I know when I first heard anything close to jazz. It's just the way people express their feelings through music, except that jazz really shows the deepest sorrow or the joy that is within a musician. Im still beginning to wonder more reasons to love jazz but I cannot because it is simply mysterious to figure out and its complexity, I guess the answer lays in my heart and simply unexplainable. ![]() Hampton Hawes - Too bad no pic of the trio was my first favourite jazz trios Here Jazz for beginners, it is categorised into few genres, which consists of Blues, Ragtime, Big Band and many more. Big names in Jazz are Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Armstrong, Pat Metheny and you can name me more. My current favourite is the Hampton Hawes Trio, a trio is actually a 3 piece instrument (keys, drum, and double bass). The thing I thrill about these trios is every instrument has a part to play, and they have equal opportunity to flex their skills through solo segments, kind of like a play where every actor /actress gets to talk out like a main character. Its solo parts really gets into you yet it sounded humble and pleasing, you won't feel like as if he/she is showing off or something. Titles that I truly recommend to others would be The Girl from Ipanema, On Green Dolphin Street, Autumn Leaves, Take Five and Corcovado. All these are still my favourites and if you are more inclined to piano/keys, go for the ones from Oscar Peterson or Ahmad Jamal; saxophone fanatics can opt for Miles Davis or simply any jazz trio for the complete effect of jazz. ![]() Diana Krall - Current queen of female jazz vocals One of the current modern jazz vocal is none other than Diana Krall, her voice improvises like the saxaphone and she plays a good deal of jazz piano too, her latest album, 'The Girl in the Other Room' is recommended. November 10 Finally I Am Liberated! The
cost accounting paper, which was my last exam paper, is some kind of
test not so much on intellectual abilities, but a test on your mental
strength. Three hours of calculator pressing, rows and rows of figures
to check and balancing and yet have to be alert so that my handwriting
is still and always "readable". The excitement of finishing the finals
intermarries with the pressure of getting it done properly continue
to weight up against one another. That's 3 hours of "balancing"
both elements into equilibrium and finally making way for the brain and
memory stuff to flow to my hands, my calculator, and the pen, and to
the answer script book. The last question was proven to be a trivial one, not because it is difficult to do, but the excitement of "Im Finally Done" fills my inner self. However, I was able to concentrate given the plenty amount of time. 10 minutes before it all ends, my pen stopped. My script book closes. That's it, I finally checked it thoroughly and have given my best shot. Im done with the finals. Im Liberated. Praise Him Who has given me the strength and shielded me from all kinds of oppression! Anyways... I got to kill all these stress. All pressure. All headaches. All worries. All kinds of stuff you don't want to have. What! Going to Planet Shakers Rally Night!.. Yeah... Let all these abovementioned junk be all gone and trade it with a heart of joy. ^ Descriptive writing ends here. Pardon me. I've gotta get rid of my blog's reputation as a FOOD BLOG. No way its gonna be a food blog. NO WAY. So I kickstarted with all kinds of descriptive writing, in hopes of people wanting to see a "poetic" blog. Maybe it will be. For now. So me finals are gone long ago... after exams went and eat dinner... the MYF people wanna go McDs.. So I eat in Ming Tien Coffee Shop nearby. No McDs... Just not today. It turns out that not McDs...... but they were eating at Penang Street... So went there and it looks pretty posh and comfy... chatted with the gang... and took some pictures: ![]() ![]() Nothing much, just the restaurant pics... just gotta luv that face on the last picture... NOT. Anyways, went up to the convention centre, see the crowd and got overwhemed: ![]() Yeah.. very big event you know... Bigger than any events you've been to in you life. Serious. The band rocked the house and it roofs are coming up... Gotta love their new songs. Planet Shakers this year got the crowd moving way a lot from the last time... So we are jumping non stop, yelling non stop (not me), all thanks to the people there... especially the guest speaker... hmm the Regie guy izzit... He's pretty much serious about his talk as he is so humourous that night. (may sound queer, but come if you didnt make it... Friday night's the last one). Sorry, photos aren't allowed but managed to snap a pre-show stage pic to give u an idea of it. I doubt I would have time to take photos, cos Im enjoying myself very much. The no photography message has to come after I got this: ![]() Anyways, I did turn fresh that night after the stress of exams and all. Really worth it for a change. Now its result waiting period. The nightmare is not over yet. Just gotta appreciate the holidays Im getting from all that fuss over the semester... This time going to update my blog regularly. I promise. With all this time I can now. So stay tuned for more updates to come yeah! October 21 Finally!! After 3 Months!!
It has truly been a long long time since I've updated my blog... I've
been prompted by friends "Why you didn't update your blog?" Well, the
answer is Im too busy with my uni assignments, presentations that has
due dates overlapping one another, and with exams coming soon (Im in
the midst of preparing for it, actually), I really don't have the time
to even say Im Busy! Thats how busy I was... wish holidays come soon... Then I can concentrate on the things I enjoy best. For now, my three-month-old butterfly pea flower creeper plant has finally bloomed its first flower. So I think it deserved a well recognition on my blog for all of you to see: ![]() This could be quite familiar with you all, the scientific name, Clitoria Ternatea, or butterfly pea flower is a creeper plant that climbs around fences and blooms navy blue coloured petals all year round. I don't have a proper fence to let it twist around... so I have to make do with old sticks. ![]() This plant uses seed pods (something like snow peas) to propagate around. I've managed to collected dry ones and soak the seeds, which are black in colour for about 5 hours. Then, I laid the seeds on red sand medium and the pea shoots come out about 2 to 3 days. So far the plant kept growing and the leafs kept increasing, but the flower is still nowhere to be seen; until I saw one yesterday and captured the "inaugural blooming". This blog entry is related to the previous nyonya kuih post and believe or not, the butterfly pea flower is used in making one of the popular local snacks, the pulut tai tai. It is a glutinous rice kuih with blueish marble pattern: ![]() Familiar? You need about 30 to 40 flowers to make 700g. I know its far from what I have (only one!) but sooner I can get more than that! September 08 Nyonya Kuih Talam
I do enjoy doing some cooking whenever I'm free. Partly is because I love mixing ingredients and it involves innovation and creativity. I just enjoy walking up and down of the stuffy kitchen to mix, grind and chop ingredients. Although it can be tiresome, nonetheless, it can be very fulfilling when everyone gets to taste the final outcome. August 25 Kiasuism has its role in our societyKiasuism.... what is that?(Malaysians, Singaporeans U know it). Well according to wikipedia:
Kiasu is a Hokkien (a Chinese spoken variant) word for 'extreme fear of losing'. This word is so widely used by Malaysians and Singaporeans that it is incorporated into their English vocabulary (in the form of Manglish or Singlish). It is often used in describing the social attitudes of people, especially about East Asian society and its values. Its widespread use is often due to the fact that these attitudes are common - not to lose out in a highly competitive society, for example, to the extent of parents imposing heavy study labour on their children in their wish to make them at the very top of all other students. Growing up with this attitude, these students often become ambitious businesspeople, with the desire to be on top in wealth and prestige. So wikipedia has it. The world knows about it. But what makes you a kiasu person?
1. You have gotta get up as early as 3am, queue up in front of a store so that you are the first to get the item (remember the potter book?)
2. You were driving to work and suddenly that fella has to cut your queue, so you rev your engine till the max and "cut back that fella lah"
3. You are doing some shopping in the supermarket and saw lots of people trying out that yummy sample fruit juice. You rushed and push and snatch the last cup before that old lady can even reach for it.
4. You look inside, outside, right-side, left-side, up-side, down-side when you get that ultra cheapo magazine from a store.
5. Halfway through filling petrol, you go shaking your car's rear end so that that are no "air bubbles" in your petrol tank... Save money $$$$
6. Checking a full load of shopping cart just to check got any free gift that I forgotten in front of a annoyed supermaket gift assistant.
7. Petrol tales: Please do not hesitate to shake the petrol filler until the last micron of petrol gets into the petrol tank. Worth every cent $$$$
8. Doggy bagging (chinese: tarpau) any leftovers for my supper after a wedding banquet in a good hotel.
9. Petrol (not again!) price has increased again.... izzit true? rumour or not? aiyah just seeing 'dragon' lines in petrol stations at 11:45 PM makes me wanna join them before the clock strikes 12!!!!
10. During one minister's open house party:
What? I can't hear you? Izzit? the wash room at the back ar? This is the swimming pool I know? Got water....Can swim but cannot wash hands ar?
Knowing all these, that's all I can share. Blog Launch!!!!My
first blog entry!!!! after numerous times of looking at other people's
blogs. I finally can have one too! Looking forward to a great time of
posting and spamming!!!! |
